The Red Convention Comes To Bedfordview

THE RED CONVENTION – a four day dance convention is coming to Bedfordview.  The event has been put together by local professional dancer, choreographer and teacher Robynne Versfeld.

Offering something for everyone. Ruben Sanchez, top international tap dancer, trainer and choreographer will present this international standard event focusing on Tap. The Convention has added Hip Hop, Jazz, Contemporary and Latin workshops to create a full dance experience. Additional fun and interesting workshops fill the gaps, making this a 4 day convention you do not want to miss. Let the Red Convention take you to your next level of dance.

Ruben Sanchez started dancing at the age of 6 where he studied Classical Ballet, Contemporary, Jazz and Ballroom. Ruben has taught at many international dance festivals such as The Odessa Tap Festival, Tap United, Tap ON Barcelona, Paris Tap Festival and Taptastic just to name a few. Ruben has also made appearances in performances by companies such as Camut Band, Tapeplas, 4 Rhythm and Cambuyon among many others.

More recently, he is soloist Tap Dancer at the Centre Coreographique National de Grenoble in France as well as a teacher at the Luthier Tap Dance Formation in Barcelona.

Ruben studied under Tap Masters such as Guillem Alonso, Jason Samuels Smith, Max Pollack, Josh Hillbermann, Dereck Grant, Ted Levi, Leela Petronio, Sharon Lavi and Barbara Duffy and he continues to share his knowledge by teaching all around the world.

The other professional dancers who will be giving workshops are well-known contemporary dancer and choreographer, Kelsey Middleton who has worked in theatre, television, radio and film during her career and won many prestigious awards. She has been the artistic director of Kmad Dance Company, since 2002. Kmad, the Kelsey Middleton Academy of Dance, is now in its 24th year. Kelsey has been running a gap year programme, Kmad Graduate, for school leavers wanting to pursue a career in dance, for the past 9 years and Kmad Outreach, in Mamelodi, is now in it’s 8th year.

As a choreographer, she choreographed 5 works for Kyknet’s “DANS, DANS, DANS“ and numerous works for SABC 3’s seasons 1,2 and 3 of “SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE” both in Contemporary and Jazz styles. Kelsey worked with local professional choreographer such as Christopher Kindo, Esther Nasser, Mark Hawkins, Sonje Mayo, Robin Orlin, Adele Blank, Alfred Hinkel and Boyzie Cekwana, as well as International choreographers, such as, Robert North, Eliza Monte and Ed Wubbe.

The Red Convention will cater for dancers of all skill levels, from beginners who want to learn the fundamentals, to skilled dancers who want to take their skills to a new level.
