Dis-Chem Announces 2020 Half Marathon Winners

    Dischem 2020 Half Marathon participants.

The Dis-Chem Half Marathon, held on 12 January, proved to be a fan favourite. This is according to race director Chard Swart from Bedfordview Athletics. Many participants praised the event on Facebook as being very well organised and the hosts as the friendliest in Johannesburg.

This is the 19th year Dis-Chem is the title sponsor of the event, which is going from strength to strength. The course – through Bedfordview, Morninghill and Primrose – provided runners with a challenging route and spectacular views particularly as the road crests and dives down Primrose Hill. Volunteers at over 63 points along the route provided the refreshments and spirited encouragement to the runners.

In first place was Philani Buthelezi from Murray & Roberts Running Club, with a time of 1:08:11, followed by Sibusiso Nzima and Juan Van Deventer, both from Nedbank Running Club. In the ladies 21km race, in first place was Chrizell Roberts in a time of 1:25:27, shortly followed by Yolande Maclean and then Alexandra Stuart-Smith.

Men’s winner Philani Buthelezi.Chrizell Roberts, ladies winner.

The race sold out within weeks of the entries opening. 6500 people signed up for the 21km main race and the Centrum 5km Dash. ‘Goodie bags’ were packed with items runners love, from T-shirts, socks, deodorant, lotions, creams, energy bars/supplements and biscuits. There was even washing powder to clean that stinky running gear!

At sign up, money was raised for the two race charities: Lambano Sanctuary for orphaned children with HIV and the Namaqua Dogs & Donkey Foundation, which provides sterilisation, vaccination and treatment of animals in informal settlements. The runners donated over R31,000, which was doubled by the Dis-Chem Foundation.

The fun did not end at the finish line at Bedfordview Country Club – Transact provided free physiotherapy and massages for the runners’ sore legs and Virgin Active’s on-stage dance moves got the crowd going. Over 70 spot prizes ranging from hampers, gym bags, restaurant vouchers, shoe wallets, massage vouches to R750 gift vouchers at The Sweat Shop were given out after prize giving.

There was even a Guinness World Record attempt after the race. How many squats can a person do in three minutes? Well, Tshepiso ‘CrazyT’ Malapane managed a record-smashing 232! Race sponsors included: Dis-Chem, Centrum, Biogen, Techniblock, Norflex, Smecta, ArthroChoice, Transact, Lamisal, Henningways, Garmin, Stallion Security, Huawei and KIA.
