A big thank you to Afrihost for sponsoring ten 50GB CellC data SIM cards for the Bedfordview Community Policing Forum (BCPF) smart camera system. This system is being used to track and apprehend criminals. ‘Technology and intelligence are our best weapons against criminality,’ said Leon de Bruin of the BCPF.
There are 24 licence plate recognition cameras around Bedfordview, which are monitored offsite, with a further 5 installations lined up. The positions of the cameras are very strategic and are not public knowledge. Each installation costs in the region of R25,000. Some residents in road closures and streets in the suburb have funded the installation of cameras in their areas which form part of the smart camera network.
There have been quite a few camera successes already. On the 24th of July, as a result of joint intelligence gathering by both BCPF and RAG, a local security company, patrollers and Reaction Officers were ready and waiting for armed robbers who have been targeting Bedfordview for months. The criminals were caught in the act, arrested and their weapon found on them.
