Physiotherapy Bedfordview has suggested three interval training programmes to get runners going from any level. This article focuses on level one – returning to running following an injury or a long break of one month or more.
The programme comes from Blaise Dubois’ ‘The Running Clinic’, an essential guide for every runner. The Running Clinic is an organisation providing continuing education to health professionals that has grown to become a global reference in the prevention of running injuries.
Returning to running following an injury requires a calculated progression. Depending on your condition and symptoms, customise the time taken to complete this programme by repeating training sessions or modifying recovery time between sessions.
This eight week programme will take you from a 16 minute (mostly walking) workout to a full 30 minutes of running. The intervals switch between walking and running, starting with just a minute of running at a time and building up over the programme. If you have been off your feet for a while, then this is the place to start. Download the programme here.
