Mbombela (Nelspruit)

Mpumalanga’s capital city (previously called Nelspruit) was a hub for gold diggers, farmers and traders. It is now a thriving commercial centre and has great shopping malls, good restaurants and a lively nightlife.

Barberton

This town is cradled by the Makhonjwa Mountains. It is a mecca for international scientists due to its microfossil plant life. This historic little town was started in the 1880s gold rush days and it was South Africa’s first gold stock exchange. It is known for its heritage walks, working gold mines and adventure activities.

Hazyview

This small town is often surrounded by mountain mists, hence the name Hazyview. It is a great base from where visitors can enter two of the Kruger National Park gates and it is the perfect town to stock up on groceries and supplies before entering the park. There is an aerial cableway. Be sure to visit the Elephant Sanctuary just outside Hazyview.

Sabie

Sabie is situated in the heart of the Panorama Route. It is in the middle of one of the world’s biggest man-made forests of 450 square kilometres of pine and eucalyptus trees. Sabie once depended on gold but now gets its wealth from timber. It is close to the Kruger National Park and has a magnificent waterfall.

Pilgrim’s Rest

Pilgrim’s Rest was once the centre of the 1870s gold rush. You can see many of the original buildings, like the Royal Hotel, the general store and the newspaper office (where the Irish editor kept a pair of loaded pistols on his desk), as you walk up the steep hill to the village.
