Dis-Chem 2022 Half Marathon Raises Over R34,000 For Charities

The 20th Dis-Chem 21km race took to the streets of Bedfordview and Primrose on Sunday 16 January 2022. Over R34,000 was raised for the two charities, Lambano Sanctuary for orphaned children with HIV and the Namaqua Dog and Donkey Foundation, which provides sterilisation, vaccination and treatment of animals in informal settlements. Runners’ donations over and above their entry fee were matched by the Dis-Chem Foundation.

The challenging, yet scenic route of the race went through Bedfordview, Morninghill and Primrose. In first place was Desmond Mokgobu from Entsika Running Club, with a time of 1:06:31, shortly followed by Sibusiso Nzima and Philani Buthelezi, both from Murray & Roberts Running Club. In the ladies 21km race, in first place was Irvette Van Zyl from Nedbank Running Club CGA in a time of 1:16:02, followed by Emma Pallant from Peak Running Club and Patience Murowe from Nedbank Running Club Zimbabwe. The winners this year came in faster than at the 2020 event, however no records were broken.

Congratulations to all the winners of the R26,300 in prize money. Full Results can be viewed here. To download your Finisher’s Certificate, please click on your name in results and click on Certificate.

This year was the first time Virtual Race entries were available and congratulations to all the runners who completed and uploaded their times. Virtual Results can be viewed here. The live race was hosted with all Covid protocols in place as specified by Athletics South Africa. Bedfordview Country Club (BCC) Athletics are looking forward to hosting the full race experience next year.

This is the 20th year of Dis-Chem’s event title sponsorship and we thank the following co-sponsors: Centrum, Norflex Gel, smecta, TransAct, ViralChoice and Biogen for their continued support which has spanned many years. Their contributions are critical to ensuring Dis-Chem’s continued hosting of the event.

Stan Goetsch of headline sponsors Dis-Chem, commented, ‘After the unfortunate cancellation of last year’s event we are as relieved, as I’m sure each participant was to run in an organised event again, to have successfully concluded our 20th sponsorship. We thank all participants, co-sponsors and the BCC organising club for their consistent support over the past two decades and we look forward with eager anticipation to the 21st rendition of our Dis-Chem sponsorship.’

‘Thank you to our sponsors, service providers, EMPD and the many volunteers at registration, set-up and over 63 points along the route who provided support and refreshments to the runners. We have received positive feedback after the race from the local community and runners and we would like to thank residents of Bedfordview, Primrose and the surrounding areas, particularly those affected by the route, for their patience and support,’ said Charn Swart Race Director.
