Foodie Review: Petrone’s Pizzeria In Dunvegan

Foodie Review Petrones Pizzeria In Dunvegan

Master foodie Vis Naidoo visited Petrone’s Pizzeria, where he and two friends had an impromptu lunch. This became a full-on meal that involved savouring unusual menu items, excluding Margherita pizza, which Naidoo always tastes as a barometer of pizza quality.

‘Owned by the delightful husband and wife team, Massimo (Massi) and Colette Petrone, one can easily spot the secret ingredient in their food – passion for their craft – making great quality food. Massi is very strict about the quality of the flour, tomatoes and cheese he uses in his pizzas, as well as every other ingredient. The emphasis is on freshly made and made well. The wood-fired oven produces great quality food and Massi was on hand to quality check everything.

We were served by Massi himself and had the following items to share:

Casa Mia salad: fresh avocado, tasty halloumi, spicy chicken with crunchy lettuce, plump baby tomatoes and slices of cucumber, which comes with their exotic honey mustard dressing. The salad has so much flavour from the spicy chicken that I added just a little dressing. It’s a great starter or light meal.

Porky Alfredo pasta: delicious fettuccine in a beautiful sauce and loaded with tender smoked pulled pork, that has a slightly sweetish taste from the BBQ sauce basting and mushroom slices. It’s an amazing pasta dish.

Antonio pizza: a white pizza with a great base – no tomato, with flavourful Parma ham, basil and yummy bocconcini. A great tasting pizza that is light and flavourful if you’re counting calories.

Margherita pizza: always a great indicator of the overall pizza quality. The right crispness, gooey mozzarella cheese and a lovely Napolitana sauce make this a great pizza. I’ll have this anytime.

Don Petrone pizza: one of their signature pizzas that has two ingredients that make it very unique – cheddar cheese and mayo. It’s a meat lovers pizza with delish salame, bacon, chilli, peppadews, avocado and sundried tomatoes on a Napolitana and mozzarella covered base. Come hungry for this one.

Tiramisu for dessert: a tub size portion of sheer yumminess. It featured a well balanced espresso, liqueur and awesome mascarpone, with a generous dusting of cocoa. I loved it!

Overall, it was a great experience and definitely worth a visit or two! I’m glad Massi let us sit down as I believe that’s the only way to eat pizza – straight outta the oven. We took home half of everything – so expect generous portions. They also have several options of banting pizza bases and items for vegetarians.’
