Special Days To Observe: International Women’s Day – #EachforEqual

8 March is a United Nations (UN) observance called ‘International Women’s Day’ (IWD). According to Observances Global, the first women’s day was actually on 28 February and held in New York City in 1909 by the American Socialist Party.

On this day each year, there are special media campaigns, women’s rights events and exhibits, and fundraising campaigns for various women’s rights causes. The theme for this year’s IWD based on International Women’s Day.com is #EachforEqual – an equal world is an enabled world.

The 8 March date springs from the holiday kept by Soviet Russia, commemorating the Russian Revolution, which actually began with an uprising of women textile workers, in 1917, during World War I. It was only in 1975 that IWD was declared a UN observance and began to be celebrated by non-Socialist countries. Today, it is meant to commemorate the struggle for women’s rights and gender equality. And it looks back to roots in various labour movements of the early 1900’s.
